Artist Meryem Meg Designs T-shirt With Indonesian Child

By day, Meryem Meg is Design Lead at WeTransfer, but on evenings and weekends she can be found in her studio creating multi-disciplinary artworks which “[aim] to explore indigenous methods of mark making through a diasporic lens”. Meryem is Algerian, Bulgarian, and grew up in France (Paris) and the UK. Her dual African and European heritage is conveyed in themes of fertility and birth across video, painting, printing and book making.

For the Face This x WePresent T-shirt collection, Meryem Meg designed a T-shirt together with Gia (12) from Lombok, Indonesia. All proceeds will be used to get Gia’s school a computer studio, so the school can fight digital illiteracy.

Surfing ground

Artist Meryem Meg tells us about her first reaction, when she received Gia’s drawing. “I loved all the little elements in her drawings, she created a really detailed portrayal of how she sees and experiences her surfing ground in Senggigi. I was excited and inspired by it and couldn’t wait to get started.”

Spontaneous and free

How did Meryem Meg experience collaborating with Gia? “I really cherish the exchange, and freedom they bring. It pushes me into an open space to also explore in a more spontaneous and free way.”

Enjoying the ocean

Is there anything she wants to say to Gia? “I would love to tell her: I love what you are doing, and feel inspired by it. You’re very talented and I loved working on the drawing with you. Keep surfing and enjoying the ocean.”
