Artists help Indonesian kids renovate their school by designing T-shirts

In August 2018 a deadly earthquake on Lombok, Indonesia killed hundreds of people and destroyed a myriad of houses and buildings. Including the SDN 1 Senggigi school, which is still not renovated. That’s why the 254 pupils of this school still get their classes in tents outside of the school building. And because of that, getting over the traumatic experience an earthquake causes, it’s hard for the kids to move on with their lives.

9 brave school kids x 9 (street)artist = 9 T-shirts for good

In April this year (9 months after the earthquake), a group of 9 pupils from the school on Lombok took action to rebuild their school by doing what they love to do: drawing. Although most parts of their village – including their school – are still broken, the kids created drawings about the places in their village which they love most. While drawing they were able to escape reality for a moment. But those drawings might end up in changing that reality forever, as they’ll raise funds to renovate their school. In order to achieve that, the 9 leading (street)artists below volunteered to help transform the drawings into exclusive T-shirt designs. And with the proceeds we are able to renovate the kids’ school.

“This is a new experience and it’s really interesting to see a child`s perspective through their drawing. There is no judgement in there, they do not think too much about things like adults do. They are just free and draw with that freedom. They draw things just as they see them. And that is really refreshing to work with. It helped me to slow down and see things in new ways as well. He illustrated the elements: sea, beach, sky, birds, swimming. There wasn’t too much going on, so in a way the drawing was very simple and my art quite like that too. “He did a drawing with black lines to which I added colour to pop it up a little bit. This collab was challenging because I mainly work with photos, a line drawing is different. I made a lot of revisions and it took a while for getting the balance right. My idea was approaching this completely open minded and turn my child brain on and see what happened.
