In August 2018 a deadly earthquake on Lombok, Indonesia killed hundreds of people and destroyed a myriad of houses and buildings. Including the SDN 1 Senggigi school, which is still not renovated. That’s why the 254 pupils of this school still get their classes in tents outside of the school building. And because of that, getting over the traumatic experience an earthquake causes, it’s hard for the kids to move on with their lives.

9 brave school kids x 9 (street)artist = 9 T-shirts for good

In April this year (9 months after the earthquake), a group of 9 pupils from the school on Lombok took action to rebuild their school by doing what they love to do: drawing. Although most parts of their village – including their school – are still broken, the kids created drawings about the places in their village which they love most. While drawing they were able to escape reality for a moment. But those drawings might end up in changing that reality forever, as they’ll raise funds to renovate their school.  In order to achieve that, the 9 leading (street)artists below volunteered to help transform the drawings into exclusive T-shirt designs. And with the proceeds we are able to renovate the kids’ school.

Jon Burgerman x Kartini (8)

“There is no right or wrong in art work. Drawings get my attention when you sense that they are honest and have no pretentions. That’s why I like Kartini’s drawings so much. Her drawing contains all these aspects. It is really beautiful, every little line and shape tells me something; it is open. Kartini knows very well how to depict her favourite place. That is very nice.” Read the full interview we did with Jon Burgerman.

Mike Perry x Shafa (8)

“I am lucky to be able to be a grown up child. It’s not for everyone, but it works for me. Any chance I get to collaborate with a young person is a great one.”

Mark Conlan x Faris (9)

“This is a new experience and it’s really interesting to see a child`s perspective through their drawing. There is no judgement in there, they do not think too much about things like adults do. They are just free and draw with that freedom. They draw things just as they see them. And that is really refreshing to work with. It helped me to slow down and see things in new ways as well. He illustrated the elements: sea, beach, sky, birds, swimming. There wasn’t too much going on, so in a way the drawing was very simple and my art quite like that too. My art is very simple, but got a lot of meaning behind it.” Read the full interview we did with Mark Conlan.

Supermundane x Hafiz (12)

“I hope people and Hafiz like the t-shirt I designed and that it helps the children on Lombok. The Face This approach could work all around the world, it is about creating something positive together.” Read the full interview we did with Supermundane.

Jamie Browne x Gia (12)

“What motivated me to work with Face This is that I thought it was a really ingenious way to work with the community you’re helping at the same time. It’s not a hand-out, the kids get involved and have some fun and get a sense of the world and what’s possible for them. Maybe they can be an artist too. It’s a really inspired way of making things together, to help something.”

Bodil Jane x Salsabila (9)

“I consider the collaboration as very inspirational! I’m so used to working in my own style that it was a bit of challenge to let Salsabila’s style also shine through. But I think I managed in the end.” Read the full interview we did with Bodil Jane.

Hedof x Ayu (9)

“This collaboration was not only a great cause, but it was also a great opportunity for me to collaborate with a cool person on the other side of world.” Read the full interview we did with Hedof.

Kyle Steed x Taupan (11)

“I really loved his attention to the things he most enjoys in life (futbol). I like how not only did he pay attention to the players on the field, but also the natural environment that surrounds him. It shows a high level of awareness to his surroundings which is super important to me… and something I’m constantly tuning into.” Read the full interview we did with Kyle Steed.

Tyler Spangler x Samsul (12)

“He did a drawing with  black lines to which I added colour to pop it up a little bit. This collab was challenging because I mainly work with photos, a line drawing is different. I made a lot of revisions and it took a while for getting the balance right. My idea was approaching this completely open minded and turn my child brain on and see what happened. Really fun!” Read the full interview we did with Tyler Spangler.
