This wearable art collaboration connects freelance artist Jordan Kay with 11-year-old Desthan from the SDN 004 Mentarang school in Pulau Sapi. Desthan loves the beach. He hopes to visit it some day and see the perfect sunset. All proceeds from the merch sales will go towards helping his school.

Desthan (11)

Pulau Sapi, Indonesia

Desthan is an 11-year-old pupil at SDN 004 Mentarang, living in the small town of Pulau Sapi in North Kalimantan. Desthan is an aspiring artist, who one day hopes to become a seniman. This refers to someone skilled in a creative field, such as painting, sculpture, or performance. Though he cannot visit the beach, he is mesmerised by its beauty and perfection.

Jordan Kay is an award-winning freelance artist with a laundry list of amazing brand collabs under her belt. She has worked with Starbucks, Disney, Paramount Pictures, and The Washington Post, just to name a few. In 2023, she won a Webby Award for her artwork in Lizzo’s Big Girls animated social video. Her style leans heavily on bold colours, decisive strokes, and movement-like fluidity. Perfect to brighten up your fashion during the winter season!

A drawing based on the theme of ‘perfection’

For his drawing, Desthan (11) was given the theme of perfection. The goal of the exercise was to see what Desthan sees as perfect, what he thinks about perfection, and whether it’s even possible to achieve. Desthan drew a beach sunset. When we talked to him about his art, he started out by describing a place that he wants to visit, which is the beach. This is what perfection is to him. Unfortunately, he can’t go to the beach because of financial issues.

Making art together with Desthan

Jordan’s process mainly involved adding her own flare to an already great drawing: “I focused on adding in the colours that I love, along with textures that feel true to my own illustration style. Desthan's subject matter rendering and the serenity of the composition were already perfect, so I just sprinkled a bit of my style in.”

Perfection is in the eye of the beholder

Desthan explained that his drawing is perfect and beautiful because he was the one who created it. This made us realise that perfection isn’t something objective in Desthan’s eyes. It’s the artist’s own story and intention behind their artwork that makes it perfect.
